I Am Number Four (2011)

2 min read

Another movie i ever got around to the first time was I Am Number Four, set to be the first in a series unfortunately the return wasn’t good enough to make it past a single movie which is a shame.

But when you read the premise of the movie you can sort of see why, disney put out this as what we think they hoped would be a teen pleaser to rake in the money only it didnt.

Extraordinary teen John Smith (Pettyfer) is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Olyphant), John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events – his first love (Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

Only the bits this description leaves out is.. Hes an alien, with superpowers that only manifest a while into the movie, olphant plays his guardian/protector sent by his people only he does a poor job and gets knocked off.

The bad guys here are also aliens, well that makes sense only they are 7 foot tall super strong with gills on their faces so, you know they blend in…They are played so camp its not funny or good, they arent really menacing they just make you laugh.

The movie on the whole is a bit too slapstick, heavily reliant on abilities and the overuse of CGI, which dont get us wrong is a good thing, but when it is the ONLY thing holding the movie together it is a bad choice. The story is far fetched even for sci fi, the books sold well which is why disney bought the rights but this incarnation just didnt do it well enough. The acting is barely passable these kids did not go to the hamlet school of acting but its not the aim, until six come along there is little in this movie to capture you or make you even believe there could be enough here for another two or three movies.

Overall for a time waster when there is nothing else i liked this, the effects were good and kept things at least interesting and you do want to see what happens next, which unfortunately will mean you have to buy the book series…
