M3gan (2022) Movie
3 min readWell lets start with the official blurb for this movie for a change, and to me its a good one –
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems–a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
This explains the overall idea of the movie, we have a very intelligent AI developer working for a toy company, she is in charge of this annoying line of AI toys that is all the rage. When the company is shocked to find their competitors copying their toys for half the price and the same function they have to come up with a new product. Enter M3gan the first android doll that can sell to the rich, the idea was that this thing that sells in the 1000s will be the next big thing. Gemma the scientist spends her time as a recluse, until the day her sister is killed and she has to become the guardian for her niece, to do this she sees the opportunity to do testing of her new toy. This goes well until she misses a glitch, that glitch is her not putting in controls to stop the doll evolving and even protecting life.
The movie follows the path as the doll evolves to make its own decisions to protect its master as they call it, what would it do to stop harm, would it inflict harm or even kill. And ultimately how do you stop a robot made out of titanium when it decided it doesn’t want to.
This is a well made movie that has to really be putting out the question we should all be asking ourselves, since the days of the original terminator we have to ask, with all the AI in the world, all the automated assistants, the home controllers automated cars and drones.. how long is it until they evolve to figure out that the real threat to the world and its people is itself.
The movie is well made and the child actress in the megan suite does a really good job of it keeping it fully believable. This should have been up for an award or two but hasn’t made it.
Overall a good 4 out of 5. it would have been a 5 if the ending wasn’t so abrupt, you follow the movie for like an hour and 20 minutes with its twists then in the last 10 minutes all hell breaks loose to the ultimate end. And look for the twist right before the titles…
