Kraven the Hunter (2024)

The story – Kraven the Hunter tells the origin story of Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a man driven by his father’s relentless expectations to become the ultimate predator. Raised by a tyrannical father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), Sergei undergoes a dramatic transformation after an encounter with a mystical lion’s blood. This alters him into a hunter with superhuman abilities. The movie follows Sergei’s descent into moral ambiguity as he battles his family ties and attempts to define his own legacy. Alongside Sergei is Calypso (Ariana DeBose), a mysterious ally with her own dark powers. Dmitri Kravinoff, Sergei’s half-brother (Fred Hechinger), is set up as a future adversary, laying the groundwork for his transformation into the Chameleon.

This movie is one within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe which is a collection of spin-offs exploring Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. While Spider-Man himself is notably absent, subtle references—like Daily Bugle headlines and mentions of Oscorp—connect the film to the wider universe, including Venom and Morbius. A mid-credits scene teases potential clashes with Spider-Man in future installments, but its reception raises doubts about these plans.

The reception to Kraven the Hunter has been underwhelming. Critics were divided on its tone and pacing, with many citing a lack of focus. The performances, particularly Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s physicality as Kraven and Russell Crowe’s domineering presence, received moderate praise. However, the film’s dialogue, CGI, and character arcs were heavily criticized. Being reliant on the CGI over physical effects seems to detract from this story allot, as a supposed super human there are allot of animated characters most notably our arch enemy for the final battle who seems ultimately floored like a death star…

The movie grossed a disappointing $30.2 million globally against a production budget of $110–130 million so from this it has to be a current major loss leader for Sony, but it could claw some of this back with online sales and streaming deals, though this isnt guaranteed..

Kraven the Hunter had the potential to bring a unique, feral energy to the Spider-Man Universe but faltered in execution. While it offers a few entertaining moments and intriguing nods to Spider-Man lore, its weak script and underdeveloped characters leave it feeling like a missed opportunity. As Sony’s Spider-Man Universe struggles to find its footing, Kraven serves as a reminder of the challenges inherent in crafting villain-led narratives.
